Some Assembly Required
1st Floor Blue Building
On view February 25 - May 13
Many architects and home-buyers have united in support of a
variety of modern modular dwellings that refute the commonly
accepted image of "prefab" homes as cheap, cookie-cutter
structures. This exhibition will present various
approaches to prefab—homes that are built by the owner out
of a kit with an instruction manual, such as Rocio Romero’s
LVL House, to those that are delivered fully assembled, like
the diminutive one-room version of Alchemy Architect's
weeHouse. The exhibition will also include Turbence House by
Steven Holl; Black Barn, a pitched-roof, modern adaptation
of a Viking longhouse designed and produced by Pinc House of
Sweden; and the playful Lazor Flatpak by Lazor of Office of
Minneapolis. These homes share an economical and ecological
approach to living and building, just as the owners approach
their lifestyles. Prefab home-owners often desires more
flexible living spaces, an expeditious building process, and
quality construction materials. More and more are finding
that prefab structures
effectively and efficiently satisfy the conditions that make
the dream of owning a modern home a reality. This exhibition
is organized the Walker Art Center and curated by Andrew
Blauvelt. Rebecca Morse is the coordinating curator for
MOCA’s presentation of Some Assembly Required.
